Originally developed, refined, and presented by a speech-language pathologist for perceptually impaired children, the lessons presented in this book can be used by regular classroom and special education teachers to stimulate 6- to 9-year-olds' interests in sounds, letters, and words. Each of the 54 lessons is based on one particular consonant or blend, with attention given to seeing, feeling, and hearing how the sound is produced. Lessons start with a list of words (chosen for their ability to be pictured, dramatized, presented as actual objects, felt, or worn) that begin with the consonant or blend, followed by a list of suggested materials (mostly common home or school items). Lessons frequently use synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, comparatives, rhyming words, riddles, nonsense words, and verbal associations. Choral speaking and poetry are part of every lesson. (CB)
